Athletic Bilbao

Introduction

Athletic Bilbao, officially known as Athletic Club, is one of Spain‘s oldest and most storied football clubs, steeped in a rich heritage and a unique identity. Founded in 1898, the club is based in the historic city of Bilbao, located in the Basque Country. Renowned for its unwavering commitment to fielding players of Basque origin, Athletic Bilbao has cultivated a passionate fanbase and established notable rivalries, particularly with Real Sociedad in the fierce Basque derby. The club’s identity is deeply intertwined with its local culture, making it a symbol of regional pride.

Club History

Athletic Club’s origins trace back to a group of British expatriates who played football on the banks of the Nervión River. The club was officially founded on 5th September 1898, and it quickly rose to prominence in Spanish football. Athletic’s early success included winning the Copa del Rey, Spain’s oldest football competition, for the first time in 1903. Over the decades, the club cemented its legacy with the establishment of the La Liga in 1929, where it has been a consistent participant. The Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s disrupted activities, but the club rebounded post-war and continued to build on its reputation.

Athletic Bilbao is one of the most successful clubs in Spain, with a rich trophy cabinet. The club has claimed the Copa del Rey title a remarkable 23 times, making it one of the most successful teams in the competition’s history. Their triumphs include memorable victories in 1903, 1930, 1931, and 1984, when they defeated Barcelona in the final.
